China Aid Project “Dherai Ramro”

Kathmandu is sunny and full of flowers during summer. People gather in twos and threes to exercise, relax, and enjoy the sunshine of spring at the Nepal National Stadium.  At the Stadium, a young girl who had just finished training put her hands together and said hi to Lyu Xiao who was interviewing at Stadium. She greed Namaste and asked “May I take a photo with you? ”Lyu Xiao said yes and they started their conversation. Lyu Xiao asked “ Can you speak Chinese?” she replied “Yes! I can speak a little bit”, both of them happily took a group photo.

The girl who took a photo with Lyu Xiao named Sruda, a sophomore student from high school in Kathmandu and also a shooting enthusiast. According to her, when she was a child her daddy often take her to swim, shoot, and watch competitions but in 2015, a major earthquake damaged all these facilities, and she never came  back to the stadium until 2019. Now all these facilities are repaired and she is able to come here for training again. This is possible only with the help of China.

The Nepal National Sports Center includes multiple venues such as a shooting range, swimming pool, boxing ring, and athletics field. From 2018 to 2019, China Railway 14th Bureau Group Co., Ltd. implemented the emergency repair project under the designated by the Chinese government. Emergency repair project not only repaired damaged sites and facilities, but also modernized and upgraded their functions. Mr. Raju Shrestha, the chief engineer of Nepal sports counsel, said, “China Aid Project, Dherai Ramro They provide these modern sports facilities to us.” And in April 2020, Nepal won 51 medals at the 13th South Asian Games hosted by Nepal, the best performance in history. Nowadays, thousands of people exercise and relax here every day.” Beside sports complex, China aid projects such as roads, schools, and water wells have benefited more people and won widespread praise.

Damba is a truck driver who commutes between Zhangmu Port and Kathmandu almost every day. Now, he can save more than an hour of time on each trip compared to before. He said that this is possible only with the help of China. He also said that the renovation and upgrading of the Tatopani border checkpoint has improved customs clearance conditions.  According to him, previously, unloading and reloading were time-consuming and labor-intensive, but now his vehicle can enter the customs and inspect the entire container, which is convenient and fast.

The Araniko Highway is a major economic and trade corridor between China and Nepal. As a major economic and trade corridor, the Araniko Highway has undergone several maintenance and repairs after the earthquake, and the road condition is much better than before. There are multiple towns along the route, including Kodari, Bahrabise, Khadichaur, etc. There is a thriving commercial scene in Bahrabise now. Lamaa distributor of living supplies, said, "Many of the stuffs in my store, such as apples, lactose, garlic, and so on, come from China and are very popular among the crowd."

Narayan is the general manager of Panchabuddha handicraft trading company in Nepal and studied at Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has a deep affection for China. Narayan said, "In the past few years, I made several trips back and forth to Tibet for business every year, but due to the impact of the epidemic in the past two years, my business has become much worse." He is looking forward to participating in the China Tibet Nepal Economic& Trade Fair held in Lhasa on April 26th this year. At the same time, two fruit wholesalers will participate with him together to further investigate the Chinese market for agricultural products such as garlic and apples. According to him Nepalese black tea, bodhi, shawls and other products have a good market in Tibet, and Tibetan kitchen supplies such as knives and ceramics are also very popular in Nepal.

Teachers and students from multiple universities in Nepal have visited here and UN peacekeeping personnel from more than 30 countries have come here to train and study. I always tell them that this is built by Chinese friends and the quality is very good, "said by Oabi Khatri, executive director of Nepal National Armed Police Force Academy. The Nepal National Armed Police Force Academy has a building with a typical Chinese-Nepalese cultural fusion style. In 2017, the former Nepalese Prime Minister Mr. Oli stated during the opening ceremony that this is a precious gift from the Chinese government and people to Nepal. Khatri hopes that the people of China and Nepal will be friendly for generations, jointly build and share the "the Belt and Road" initiative to build a more prosperous Nepal.

At National Trust for Nature Conservation, water well ensures normal water use for all staff. One of the NTNC’s staff said, “ Many people say that there is a Chinese saying , 'when you drink the water, think of those who dug the well.' Every time we drink sweet well water, we remember the selfless help of our Chinese friends.”

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the "the Belt and Road" initiative and the sixth anniversary of the signing of the MOU between the Chinese and Nepalese governments on cooperation under the "the Belt and Road" initiative. Nepalese people generally look forward to strengthening cooperation between the two countries and building more livelihood projects, and wish the friendship between the two countries as lofty and magnificent as the Himalayas.
