Ray NEWS/KATHMANDU, September 22, 2026-The China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD) has formally handed over 27 metric tons of humanitarian relief supplies to the Government of Nepal to support communities and people affected by the landslides and debris flows that occurred on August 26.

The relief supplies, donated by Chinese companies and organizations including Xiaohongshu (RedNote), High-Flyer Quant, and A Drop of Life (Hong Kong), were transported to Tribhuvan International Airport with the support of China Southern Airlines.

The shipment contains more than 9,600 relief items, including 175 tents, 1,000 cotton-padded garments, 1,000 quilts, 1,000 emergency family kits, and more than 6,000 emergency response kits. The supplies are intended to provide post-disaster assistance to people whose homes, property and livelihoods were damaged by the disaster.

An official handover ceremony was held at 10:00 a.m. at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. Participants included Narayan Prasad Adhikari, Under Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs of Nepal; Lokendra Adhikari, Protection Officer of the Ministry of Home Affairs; Zhou Pan, Counsellor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nepal; Zou Zhiqiang, Country Director of the Nepal Office of the China Foundation for Rural Development; Yang Wenfu, General Manager of China Southern Airlines in Nepal; and representatives of relevant partner organizations.

On the day of the disaster, the China Foundation for Rural Development immediately activated its emergency response mechanism. Despite disruptions to roads and communications, the Foundation conducted a rapid needs assessment in the worst-affected areas and urgently mobilized 14 tents, 1,000 food packages, 375 family kits and 5,000 solar lamps.

The supplies arrived in the disaster-affected areas of Nuwakot District on August 31 and were subsequently distributed in severely affected communities in Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts.

The Foundation also set up tents in Nuwakot District to provide temporary shelter for 41 disaster-affected households, many of whom were women and children. As of September 20, a total of 619 food packages, 375 emergency family kits and 5,000 solar lamps had been distributed across Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts, reaching more than 10,000 people from nearly 2,000 disaster-affected households.

All relief distributions have been conducted through a household-level registration and acknowledgement system, with local government authorities participating in the verification process. The system is intended to ensure that relief supplies are properly accounted for and that the distribution process remains transparent and traceable.

Following the initial emergency response, the China Foundation for Rural Development mobilized Chinese companies and individuals to contribute to the relief effort, raising approximately RMB 1 million worth of disaster-relief supplies.

Through active coordination by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nepal, and with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of China, the General Administration of Customs of China and the Civil Aviation Administration of China, China Southern Airlines Co., Ltd. provided free transportation for the relief supplies.

The full shipment has now arrived in Nepal and has been handed over to the Ministry of Home Affairs of Nepal for coordinated distribution to disaster-affected communities.

The China Foundation for Rural Development said humanitarian assistance is an important part of its long-term work in Nepal. Over the years, the Foundation has continuously supported communities affected by earthquakes, floods, landslides and other natural disasters. It has also worked with local partners and communities on disaster risk reduction, early-warning systems and community resilience-building initiatives.

Following the handover, the Government of Nepal will coordinate the distribution of the relief supplies to disaster-affected areas and vulnerable families, providing practical assistance to help communities transition from emergency relief toward recovery and reconstruction.

The assistance comes as affected communities continue working to rebuild their homes and restore their livelihoods.
